Wind Turbine Investigations Proceed at Barnby Dun
Published: 21/04/2011
Investigations into a possible wind energy development on British Waterways land near the village of Barnby Dun took a step forward recently following public dialogue between Doncaster Council and Partnerships for Renewables (PfR). PfR have been working with British Waterways to investigate the potential for a wind energy project at the site since February last year, and now believe that the location may be suitable for a single 1.5MW turbine with a maximum tip height of 122m, and capable of producing the electricity used by more than 700 average households.* Following PfR’s public request for a ‘screening opinion’ from the Council, Doncaster planners confirmed in March that a full Environmental Impact Assessment would not be required as a part of any potential planning application at the Barnby Dun site. Jerry Sturman, Regional manager at Partnerships for Renewables explained: “A Screening Opinion forms part of the consultation process between developers and Councils, and is a way for Planning Authorities to determine the level of investigation required. We had already completed a great deal of study work on the site and were pleased to receive confirmation from the Council that a full Environmental Impact Assessment - of the type submitted by developers for the Thorpe Marsh power station - would not be required in our case. “There is a lot of work still to be done to discover whether the site is suitable for a wind turbine, and any future planning application would still require the inclusion of an environmental report incorporating the findings of noise, ecology and other technical and environmental studies that we will undertake. “Our studies are ongoing and the decision on whether or not to submit any future planning application will be based on the findings of our investigations.” Future public events in Barnby Dun have been announced by Partnerships for Renewables to encourage local residents learn more about the project and provide comments to help influence the development. Community ‘Drop-in’ events will take place on the following dates: Monday the 27th of June, and Monday 22nd August 12-7pm in the meeting room of Barnby Dun Parish Hall, Top Road, Barnby Dun. These are informal events held every 2 months with a member of the project team on hand to chat with residents about the project. Anyone unable to attend any of these events can find out more about the project at Barnby Dun by e-mailing pfr@communityrelations.co.uk or calling Partnerships for renewable on 0800 731 7395.
