Community drop-in event to be held for Saundby wind energy proposal
Published: 19/05/2011
A community drop-in surgery will be held on Thursday (26 May) to update residents on the progress of a wind energy investigation near Saundby. Although studies are still in their early stages, investigations so far suggest the site, which is owned by the Environment Agency, has the potential to host six turbines, with a generating capacity of 2.5 megawatts each. This could generate around 33 gigawatt hours (GWh) of green electricity every year, powering 7,200 homes*. Regional Manager Jo Fleming, from Partnerships for Renewables commented: “Following our first public event in February we have begun a number of technical and environmental investigations on site and the results of these will help address the various questions and concerns raised by local residents.” “The community surgery is another opportunity for interested residents and local businesses to talk to the project team and learn more about the project and how it is progressing. It’s also a valuable opportunity for us to gather feedback and views on the project to feed into our consultation process.” Partnerships for Renewables has recently received planning permission from Bassetlaw District Council to install a temporary wind monitoring mast on the site. This 70 metre high structure (approximately 20 cm diameter) will be used to gather accurate wind data and help to establish the best design for the proposed development. Mark Haslam, Area Manager at the Environment Agency said: “Generating renewable energy will play a key part in reducing our dependency on non-renewable supplies and help us produce sustainable energy for future generations. We see this as an opportunity to do our bit to help the UK meet its target and tackle climate change, which is a key priority for us.” The community surgery will be held on Thursday 26 May from 4pm to 7pm at the Recreation Room, The Green, Beckingham, DN10 4NL. This means that all development costs are met by Partnerships for Renewables and their partners do not have to divert any funds away from frontline services. The company has been investigating Environment Agency sites for possible development across England and Wales since 2008.
- Should the development go ahead The Environment Agency will receive a percentage of the profits from the electricity generated by the wind turbines.
