About the project
Oxford City Council has been working with Partnerships for Renewables to investigate the potential for the development of small commercial-scale wind energy projects on its land.
Following the screening of the Council's land assets and preliminary surveys of the most promising sites, the Horspath landholding, across the road from the Horspath Athletics Track, was identified as a promising site meriting further investigation.
Horspath
As shown in the location section of the website we originally looked at a larger area of land owned by Oxford City Council on the south-eastern outskirts of Oxford. Our ongoing work has lead us to concentrate our attention on a small proportion of this land across the road from the Horspath Athletics Track.
The work carried out so far suggests that the Horspath site could potentially accommodate a single wind turbine with a generation capacity of between two and three megawatts (MW) and a tip height of up to 130 metres.
We are at the early stages of the project and there is still a lot of environmental work to carry out to establish whether the Horspath site is an appropriate location for wind turbines.
If the site is found to be a suitable location we will submit a full Environmental Impact Assessment with the planning application and will keep the local community informed throughout the development process.
With the need to carry out the relevant environmental and technical studies, Partnerships for Renewables expects that the project will be ready for submission for a planning application no earlier than late 2010.
We hope to discuss the opportunity to supply green energy to neighbouring businesses as part of our future development work.
