About the Project
British Waterways owns land around the Killington Reservoir in Cumbria and is working with Partnerships for Renewables to explore the feasibility of generating renewable energy on this land. Potential wind turbine and small-scale hydro projects are currently being investigated.
The work carried out so far suggests that the site could potentially accommodate up to two wind turbines with a generation capacity of between two and three megawatts (MW) each and a tip height of up to 125 metres.
There is still a lot of environmental work to carry out to establish whether the Killington Reservoir site is an appropriate location for wind turbines.
If the site is found to be a suitable location we will submit a full Environmental Impact Assessment with the planning application and will keep the local community informed throughout the development process.
With the need to carry out the relevant environmental and technical studies, Partnerships for Renewables expects that the project will be ready for submission for a planning application no earlier than late 2010.
