Aviation objection brings halt to Lea Marston wind energy proposal

Published: 19/05/2011

An objection from Birmingham International Airport (BIA) has caused plans for two wind turbines on Environment Agency land at Lea Marston to be halted.

“Unfortunately, we have received an objection from Birmingham International Airport, which states that a new flight path has been established over Tamworth and that the Lea Marston site is now in a direct line of  sight for operations,” explains Dr. Jo Fleming, Regional Manager at PfR.

“The letter stating that BIA has changed its stance and would now ‘Object’ was received this month and advice from our aviation consultants suggests that we would be unlikely to find a solution to this scenario. Technical solutions for the radar risks such as those presented here are in development but remain some years off being proven, so we have made the decision to stop investigation work on this site. We would like to thank the local community for its interest and participation in the project plans.”

It is possible that plans to put a wind turbine at this site could begin again if a solution to the radar risk could be found. There are no plans for this at the moment however, and Partnerships for Renewable would inform all interested parties should this project be resumed.

Partnerships for Renewables and the Environment Agency will continue to work together on other appropriate wind energy sites in England and Wales.

Editor’s notes:

  • Partnerships for Renewables was set up by the Carbon Trust in 2006 to work in partnership with the public sector to develop, construct and operate renewable energy projects. By providing a one stop shop for the development of renewable energy projects, Partnerships for Renewables provide a way for Public Sector Bodies to access the economic and environmental benefits associated with renewable energy and contribute towards the fight against climate change without diverting public sector resources away from frontline services.
