Partnerships for Renewables (PfR) works in partnership with public sector bodies to develop renewable energy projects on public sector land.
We believe this land presents a huge opportunity for public sector organisations to generate renewable energy to use themselves or to deliver to homes and businesses around the country.
This is why we’ve set a target of assisting public sector bodies to generate over 500 megawatts of clean, green energy over the next 5 - 8 years. That’s enough to serve the houses of Exeter, Oxford, Norwich and Newcastle combined: more than 250,000 homes at zero carbon cost to the environment.
An integrated service
Established by Carbon Trust Enterprises in 2006, Partnerships for Renewables has created an integrated service specifically for the public sector.
This has been designed to help public sector bodies overcome the barriers to development, which have resulted in low-carbon projects on public sector land currently making up less than 0.1% of the UK’s current total renewable capacity.
When interviewed about these barriers public sector bodies cite problems on both supply and demand sides: lack of understanding of public sector decision-making processes and public procurement issues by developers, compounded by a lack of expertise in renewables development and conflicting priorities within the public sector bodies themselves.
By covering all the development costs and offering a market-leading commercial package, we provide public sector bodies with a low-risk opportunity to access the benefits associated with renewable energy, while making a contribution to tackling climate change.
