Background

The UK renewables market has expanded significantly over recent years, with current growth of 7-8% per annum. Despite this growth, renewables capacity is unlikely to meet the Government’s targets for 2010 or 2015. Present estimates indicate shortfalls of approximately 2.7 gigawatts (GW) of installed capacity against the 2010 target, and approximately 5.6GW of installed capacity against the 2015 target.

The public sector is increasingly recognised as having a significant role to play in reducing carbon emissions and providing leadership at a local level. With a large renewables potential, public sector projects could make a material contribution towards the UK ‘renewables gap’, but installed onsite renewables capacity by public sector bodies (PSBs) to date is very low.

Carbon Trust Enterprises established Partnerships for Renewables to be a trusted partner for public sector customers wanting to develop onsite renewables projects, thereby unlocking this important renewable energy capacity.

PfR is currently working with over 100 PSBs with a significant number of lead projects.

Carbon Trust Enterprises aims to be a leading creator of valuable carbon reducing businesses in the UK and beyond and develops new businesses which provide co-investment and strategic opportunities to partners who can bring the skills and capital investment to complement those of the Carbon Trust Group
