The University of Reading
The University of Reading is one of the top 200 universities in the world and is ranked among the UK’s most research-intensive universities with a world-class reputation for teaching, research and enterprise.
Specialist research interests within the University span climate change, wind, biomass, energy solutions and energy policy. Work has also been conducted on hydropower and solar energy. The University is home to the Walker Institute for Climate Research Systems, which draws together a number of internationally renowned climate system research groups with expertise across a wide range of core disciplines central to climate system science. Major research areas within the School of Construction Management and Engineering include Innovative and Sustainable Technologies and Technologies for Built Environments.
Sustainability is at the heart of the University’s developments on its campuses. The Carrington Building on the Whiteknights campus was the first construction on campus to use geothermal energy. An integrated photovoltaic roof, which generates electricity directly from solar energy, is also a feature of the University’s Engineering building. The halls of residence under construction this year, the recently completed Henley Business School and Hopkins Life Science laboratories have all achieved a Very Good BREEAM certification (the international Environmental Assessment Method for buildings).
