Partnerships for Renewables is working with the Forestry Commission in Scotland to explore the potential for siting wind turbines in the West Benhar plantation.

Benefits

Onshore wind power is one of the most mature and cost-effective renewable energy technologies and Forestry Commission Scotland and Partnerships for Renewables believe that wind energy could provide a number of community, economic and environmental benefits.

The National Programme

Estimates suggest that, across the country, the wind potential available on Forestry Commission Scotland land could meet the needs of over a million homes and has the potential to generate £30 million a year by 2020.

The income will help fund Forestry Commission Scotland's other programmes, for example on the national forest estate and through grant support for other  woodlands (eg in the private sector, or owned by communities and local authorities).

Many commercial forests are monocultures and the development of wind turbines will be accompanied by Habitat Management Plans which will help ensure that the local environment  will benefit from additional diversity whenever possible.

The Regional Programme

Until further assessments are carried out on individual sites in the Borders and central belt it is hard to know how many turbines could be appropriately located on the sites. It is envisaged that all sites, that progress to planning applications, will be multi-turbine sites and have the capacity to make a significant contribution towards Scottish Government targets.

Developments will incorporate feedback from the local stakeholders to ensure that any future proposal is well designed with features to benefit the local environment and forest users.

Community Benefits

Forestry Commission Scotland and Partnerships for Renewables are committed to maximising community benefit and will be seeking to develop market-leading community benefit packages alongside their developments.

Please note: Each single 2.5MW turbine would be expected to generate approximately 6.5 GWh of green energy per year. This is equivalent to the amount of energy used annually by approximately 1,400 average households.

Each wind turbine of this scale is expected to avoid 2,800 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year.

Please note: The environmental benefit figures are based on a single 2.5 megawatt turbine, operating with a 29.4% capacity factor; average household electricity use of 4602kWh per annum; and the electricity generated displacing electricity generated fromm CCGT / average fuel mix - approx. 430gCO2/kWh
