Planning application submitted for Wheal Jane wind turbine

Published: 18/10/2011

A full planning application has been submitted to Cornwall Council for the development of a single wind turbine at the former tine mine at Wheal Jane.

Renewable energy developer Partnerships for Renewables (PfR) is proposing the development, which forms part of the Wheal Jane Masterplan being adopted by Cornwall Council. This is a vision for an earth science business cluster at the Wheal Jane site, powered by various renewable energy technologies.

Jerry Sturman, Regional Manager at PfR, commented:

“We have now completed all the environmental and technical studies on the site, which have confirmed our belief that the area is suitable for the development of a wind turbine. The turbine could generate enough electricity to power the equivalent of over 1000 homes, depending on the final capacity of the model we build, which will be between 1.5MW and 2.5MW.*

“As part of our on-going consultation programme PfR will be holding another public event now that we have submitted our plans. This will offer members of the community an opportunity to view the planning application and associated documents, as well as share any questions or comments with the project team. It will also offer another chance to see photomontages which show how the turbine would look in the landscape from various recognised viewpoints.”

A drop-in event to share the proposed plans and give local community members the chance to view the planning application will be held on Friday 28 October from 3.30pm to 6.30pm in the Wheal Jane Room at Chacewater Village Hall, Church Hill, Chacewater, TR4 8PZ.

The complete planning application and all accompanying documents will be available to read or download from the planning section of the Cornwall Council website www.cornwall.gov.uk using planning reference number: PA11/08372.

Hard copies will also be available to view at the Planning Department of Cornwall Council. If you are unable to attend the exhibition but have queries or comments, please contact us by phone on 0800 731 7395 or email: community@pfr.co.uk

* Please note: The environmental benefit figures are based on a single turbine with an installed capacity of up to 2.5MW, operating with a 25% capacity factor; average household electricity use of 4,602kWh per annum; and the electricity generated displacing electricity generated from CCGT / average fuel mix - approximately 430gCO2/kWh’
